Background: Hard lines define the relationship between the red and yellow boxes (societal rules) and the textured space between (reality and hope for the future). This is symbolic of the teenage view that the rules and routines are quite disconnected from the feverish flow of real life.
Foreground: The huddled figure is the teen's reaction to the contrast... often, it just seems too much.
